DNA

This page is organized by ahnentafel number, based on which ancestor(s) is most relevant for a specific DNA result.

Thus, Y-DNA results are organized under the most distant known male ancestor from whom that Y-DNA originated. For example, a male-line descendant of 96William Smith has provided a Y-DNA sample, and the results are described under the heading "96William Smith," regardless how many generations have passed between 96William Smith and this descendant. Below, the names of ancestors for whom Y-DNA results are available are colored blue.

Likewise, mitochondrial DNA is organized under the most distant known female ancestor from whom that mitochondrial DNA originated. Below, ancestors with mtDNA results are pink.

On the other hand, autosomal DNA results are discussed under the most recent ancestor(s) from whom that autosomal DNA originated (but ignoring very recent ancestors whose identity is secret and not discussed on this website). For example, the same male-line descendant of 96William Smith (mentioned above) also provided an autosomal DNA sample, but the results are instead discussed under the heading "12Henry I. Smith and 13Oma Mae Collins," i.e. the parents of the man who provided the DNA sample, since these are his most recent ancestors discussed on this website. Below, ancestors with autosomal DNA results are yellow.

Ancestors mentioned below will have a icon at the top of his/her profile page.

8Bryant Knight, 9Julia Thigpen, 10Curtis Geiger, and 11Mary Clyde Black

My father has autosomal DNA test results. His sample has numerous matches with DNA cousins; some of the most recent common ancestors reflected by these matches include 16George W. Knight, 17Alice Knight, 20Joseph Preston Geiger, 21Mattie Copeland, 36William M. Thigpen, 37Serena Williams, 46Rhoden Tant, 47Narcissa Black, 70Gilford Bedgood, 71Lucinda ___, 84James Copeland, 85Matilda Rabun, 90Benjamin Burton Black, 91Elizabeth Sutton, 92John G. Tant, 93Rebecca Hill, 132Rice Price, 133Morning Moore, 144Melancton Thigpen, 164Thomas Davis, 165Cemantha McLendon, 170Renson Rabun, and 174Thomas B. Logue.

This sample helped to prove that 19Sallie Williams' mother is 39Elizabeth Norris, that 38George Williams' father is 76Joseph P. Williams, that 160Jeremiah Geiger's father is 320Abraham Geiger, and that 174Thomas B. Logue's parents are 348James Logue and 349Frances Hunter.

I have a copy of the raw autosomal DNA results. If you have a compelling genealogical interest, suspect you may be related, and want to compare results manually, contact me.

My father's autosomal DNA sample has fairly close matches to samples from two descendants of Carolyn Jean Willis (FamilySearch, FindAGrave, sketch of Carolyn's lineage), but I can't identify a most recent common ancestor (MRCA). These two matches are detailed in the table below. (Note that the shared centimorgans may be inflated by pedigree collapse: 16George W. Knight and 17Alice Knight were first cousins and married each other.) Shared matches between my father and Ancestry.com user Jessica gilmour, summarized in the table further below, suggest that some peculiarity occurred involving 8Bryant Knight, 16George W. Knight, or 17Alice Knight. Highlighting the shared matches on my family tree, as I've done below, helps to illustrate the hypothesis. This hypothesis is further strengthened by a triangulated 21.9 cM segment on chromosome 4 that is common to my father, Crystal Lancaster (another known descendant of 8Bryant Knight and 9Julia Thigpen; lineage), and MyHeritage.com user Derrick Phillips. (The hypothesis is also supported, albeit less precisely, by a partial Leeds analysis that I did before noticing the matches that my father shares with Jessica Gilmour.) Y-DNA evidence disproves an alternate hypothesis of a non-paternal event along the ancestral Knight line.

Some of the common matches shared between my father and Jessica gilmour

The MRCA's from the abovementioned shared matches are highlighted on this excerpt from my family tree. As you can see, the shared matches point to some peculiarity that may have involved 16George W. Knight, his wife 17Alice Knight, their son 8Bryant Knight, or (less likely) my paternal grandfather. Alternatively, one could hypothesize a non-paternal event along the ancestral Knight line, but this is disproven by Y-DNA evidence discussed further down this page.

12Henry I. Smith and 13Oma Mae Collins

A son of 12Henry I. Smith and 13Oma Mae Collins has autosomal DNA test results on FamilyTreeDNA, kit #50817. As of this writing (April 2023), the closest match is 123 cM, but I have made no effort to determine where the relationship lies.

I have a copy of the raw autosomal DNA results. If you have a compelling genealogical interest, suspect you may be related, and want to compare results manually, contact me.

In addition, I have 23andMe data, including autosomal results, from my maternal grandfather (who is a brother of the above-noted son of 12Henry I. Smith and 13Oma Mae Collins, who provided FamilyTreeDNA kit #50817). If you have a compelling genealogical interest, suspect you may be related, and want to compare results manually, contact me.

14George Fred Brown and 15Evelyn Dunkin

My maternal grandmother has autosomal DNA test results. Her sample has numerous matches with DNA cousins; some of the most recent common ancestors reflected by these matches include 28Hiram Wesley Brown, 56Henry O. Brown, 60John R. Dunkin, 61Ailcy Catherine Garner, 62Isaac W. Brown, 63Sophronia A. Waldrip, 57Margaret Ada Haynes, 116John W. T. Parlier, 117Mary Duckett, 488Charles Garner, 489Ann Darnell, and 932William Douthit.

This sample helped to prove that 121Edith Reid's parents are 242Henry Reid and 243Edith Harrison, and that 123Sarah McGraw's father is 246Ephraim McGraw.

I have a copy of the raw autosomal DNA results. If you have a compelling genealogical interest, suspect you may be related, and want to compare results manually, contact me.

62Isaac W. Brown

Augusta "Gus" Brown, a proven male-line great-grandson of 62Isaac W. Brown, has Y-DNA test results:

As of this writing (May 2024), there are two close matches at the 111-marker level: (1) FTDNA kit 484409, who has two different markers, and who states that his earliest known Smith ancestor is William Smith (1786 - 21 March 1851); (2) FTDNA kit 358161, who has one different marker at the 111-marker level, four different markers on a 684-marker level, and five different SNP's, and who states his earliest known Smith ancestor is John Austin Smith (c1780 - 1838).

In addition, I have 23andMe data, including some Y-DNA results, from my maternal grandfather (who is a brother of the above-noted son of 13Oma Mae Collins, who provided FamilyTreeDNA kit #50817). There is a proposal that 512John's father is James, son of Captain Peter Knight; see the evidence thereof. As noted on the evidence page, FamilyTreeDNA kit #265313 belongs to an alleged male-line descendant of this Captain Peter, but sadly I'm unable to verify his lineage due to a gap in the paper trail.

The sample has mismatches when compared to all of the usually identified H1b subclades (viz: H1b1, H1b2, H1b3, H1b4, and H1b5) and only minor/common "extra" mutations.

H1b suggests an ancient east European or west Asian origin.
