7. WILLIAM DE SAY, Knt. of Edmonton, Middlesex, West Greenwich, Birling, Burham,
Cudham, Horsmonden, and Patrixbourne, Kent, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, Hartwell,
Northamptonshire, Hamsey and Streat, Sussex, etc., Constable of Rochester Castle, son and heir by
his father's 1st marriage, born before 1209 (of age in 1230). He married (1st) SIBYL ___, said to
be the daughter of John Marshal, of Lenton, Nottinghamshire (or Linton, Kent). They had two
sons, William, Knt., and John, and four daughters, Alice, Hawise, Agnes, and ___. He was in
service beyond seas in 1230. He did homage to the king for his father's land 20 Sept. 1230. In
1235 he leased the manor of Greenwich, Kent to Katherine, widow of Henry de Edelmeton, for 13
years. In1237 he conceded the right of William, Earl Warenne to the fishery of Hamsey, Sussex and
withdrew his claim to chase venison in certain of the earl's woods in Sussex. In 1237 he was
allowed ten bucks from the king's forest of Essex to place in his park at Sawbridgeworth,
Hertfordshire. The same year he confirmed the gift of his grandfather, Geoffrey de Say, to the
Templars of the manor of Saddlescombe, Sussex. In 1238 he was going on a pilgrimage beyond
seas. In 1242 he was going beyond seas with the king. In 1244 he acknowledged that land and a
messuage in Edmonton, Middlesex belonged to Richard, Prior of Holy Trinity, London and his
church, and granted the same an additional eight acres in Edmonton. His unnamed wife was living
14 August 1244, when she had three deer by gift of the king. In 1245 he was going to Wales on the
king's business. The same year he was granted free warren in his manor of Sawbridgeworth,
Hertfordshire. In 1246 he was granted a weekly market and yearly fair at manor of Great Linton,
Cambridgeshire. In 1250 he was given two deer by gift of the king. In 1253 he was going with the
king to Gascony. He joined the Barons against King Henry III. He was taken prisoner at the Siege
of Rochester Castle, and his manors of Birling and Burham, Kent, were granted to Price Edward
12 May 1264. Sometime after 1264 he confirmed the grant which Robert de Makesey deceased
made of land in Thurnham, Kent to the Prior and Convent of Cumbwell. He surrendered the
county of Kent to Roger de Leybourne 8 August 1265. In 1267, the king by "grant of special
grace," granted him the marriage of John le Marshal, grandson and heir of Aline le Marshal lately
deceased. The king also granted him £100 yearly of land out of the first wards that fall in. In 1268
he had the king's letter to conduct Robert Peche who was coming to the king's court to treat of his
peace. He married (2nd) MARY ___. SIR WILLIAM DE SAY died shortly before 12 Feb.
1271/2. His widow, Mary, married (2ndst wife) ROBERT DE
UFFORD, Knt., of Ufford, Suffolk, and, in right of his 1st wife, of Long Stratton, Norfolk, Justiciar
of Ireland, 1268-9, 1276-81, Justice of Chester before October 1276. They had one son, Robert,
Knt. [1st Lord Ufford]. He was in Wales with Prince Edward in 1257, and going beyond the seas with
him in 1261. He was present with Prince Edward at Boulogne-sur-Mer in Jan. 1263/4. He was
granted the custody of the town and castle of Orford, Suffolk in 1275-6, and again for life 28 Dec.
1280. His wife, Mary, was living 10 August 1280, and was presumably dead before 1285, when her
step-son, John de Say, was in possession of Long Stratton, Norfolk. Robert and his heirs were
granted a weekly market and yearly fair at Bawdsey, Suffolk in 1283. He married (2nd) before 1286-
7 JOAN ___. They had two sons, Thomas, Knt. [see CLAVERING 5] and Edmund. In 1289
Richard de Benge granted a messuage in the hamlet of Benge (in Pettistree), Suffolk to Robert and
his wife, Joan for 220 marks. In 1290 he was allowed to appoint attorneys, he being too old to ride,
and, again in 1296, by reason of his debility. SIR ROBERT DE UFFORD died shortly before 9
Sept. 1298. His widow, Joan, was living 18 Nov. 1307.
