220William T. Turner
Key Facts
Parents:unknown
Born:circa 1767
in the Carolinas, very likely North Carolina
Died:sometime in the 1850's
presumably Henry County, Georgia
Buried:unknown

220William Turner was born in the Carolinas1 (very likely North Carolina2) circa 1767.1,2

In 1773 he moved with his father (who unfortunately is not named in the record) from North Carolina to "Union dist[rict]," South Carolina.1 (Note, however, that Union County, South Carolina didn't exist at the time, so 220William's statement is perplexing.)

Excerpt from a deposition dated 21 March 1846 in which 220William mentions his move from North to South Carolina.2

In autumn 1784 he moved again to (what later became) Hancock County, Georgia and resided there for at least 13 years. (The record insinuates that he probably continued living there beyond 13 years.)2

Excerpt from the same deposition whereby 220William describes his moves from South Carolina to (the precursor to) Hancock County, Georgia.2

Problem: Unresolved
Did 220William participate in Georgia's 1805 land lottery?

Below is an excerpt from Paul K. Graham, 1805 Georgia Land Lottery Persons Entitled to Draws (The Genealogical Company, Decatur, Georgia, 2005), page 565.

As you can see, there were at least three men named William Turner in Hancock County at the time. I don't know which is our 220William Turner, nor how the other two Williams are related to our 220William.

As of 1812 he owned 85 acres in Hancock County.3 The 1820 census shows his family still there; the numbers below represent: 2 males age 0-9, 1 male age 16-25 (i.e., his son 110William), 1 man age 45+ (i.e., 220William himself), 1 girl age 10-15, 1 woman age 45+ (presumably 220William's wife), including 2 people engaged in agriculture.4

Like his son 110William, 220William later moved to Henry County, Georgia, where we find him in the 1830 census. The census suggests that his wife (whose identity is otherwise unknown) was still living at that time. The two young men in his household are unidentified.5

He later lived with his son 110William, as we see from the 18406 and 18501 censuses.

1840: The man of age 70-79 is very likely 220William in the home of his son 110William T. Turner in milita district 638 (map), Henry County, Georgia. Full page.6

1850: 110William living with his son 110William in Henry County. Full page.1

220William is notably absent from the same family's entry in the 1860 census,7 so I presume that he had died sometime in the 1850's. Unfortunately, though, I find no relevant entry in Henry County's estate records index book.
