Details are lacking, but 59Sallie seems to have died young, and 58Alfred re-married to Josie ___ circa 1896, as explained in the problem section below.

Problem: Resolved
If 58Alfred married 59Sallie McClellan, why do subsequent censuses show his wife as "Nancy?"

First, let's look at 58Alfred's household in the 1900 census:5

As you can see, the census-taker originally wrote "13" in 58Alfred's column for "number of years married," then scratched it out and wrote "4." The "13" seems to refer to 58Alfred's first marriage to 59Sallie, and the "4" to his (second) marriage to Josie.

As further evidence, notice the 10-year gap between the births of John W. and Ella May. This loosely implies that 58Alfred was probably a widower for some time.

Now let's see the 1910 census:6

The 1910 census explicitly notes that 58Alfred was on his second marriage ("M2"), and that he'd been married for 13 years (i.e., since about 1897).

This census also shows that Josie was the mother of six children (See the full page; the relevant portion isn't visible in the excerpt above.), all still living, and thus she was almost certainly the mother of the six children listed with 58Alfred's household in this 1910 census.

Therefore, we can also conclude that 58Alfred's two older children shown in the 1900 census (i.e., Mary Lee and John W.) were borne by 59Sallie.

By 1900 58Alfred had relocated his family to Cleburne County, Alabama, where they would spend the next few decades.5-7

Around 1923, 58Alfred relocated to Fulton County, Georgia,8-10 where he would spend the rest of his life. He moved a few times within Fulton County; below is a summary of his known addresses, and years when he lived at each.

Address Year(s) There Source Citations
45 Franklin Street 1923-1925 10-12
703 Paynes Ave NW 1930 13, 14
801 Bankhead Ave NW 1937 15
851 Bankhead Ave NW   1938-1940 1, 16, 17

45 Franklin Street seems to be what is now 699 Paines Avenue NW (judging by overlaying this 1911 Sanborn map over a modern map of the same area). 699 and 703 Paines Ave NW are next door to each other. Bankhead Ave NW was later renamed Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy NW; the 801 and 851 house numbers are both just a short walk from Paines Avenue.
