196Stephen Ammons was born circa 1781 in North Carolina.1 He may have been from Robeson County, North Carolina, since we know that his son 98Jesse was born there circa 1810.2 However, I've been unable to find 196Stephen in the 1810 census, and I know nothing else about his time in North Carolina.

On 27 March 1830 196Stephen paid $200 for 202.5 acres of land in Houston County, Georgia, specifically lot 196 of the 5th district, which I've marked on the master map. Part of the deed is copied below (with key phrases highlighted yellow).3

Not surprisingly, the 1830 census shows his family in Houston County. His first wife apparently was still alive (She's the 40-something female noted at the far right in the image below.), but I have found no record that identifies her. His son 98Jesse was apparently living very closeby.4

Whoever his first wife was, she must have died by 23 December 1841, since that's when 196Stephen married Nicey Griffith.5

The 1850 census shows 196Stephen and his wife alone in Houston County.1

196Stephen wrote his will circa early 1851 (The will isn't dated, but in it Stephen mentions that he had been married to Nicey for nine years.), and it was probated on 8 July 1851. The will names six children: [98]Jessie Ammons, Josiah Ammons, Hannah Duncan, Sarah Clark, Nancy Clark, and lastly Stephen Ammons (who is described as the youngest son). Feel free to see the county record copy (The will begins on page 276 and ends on 280.) or my transcription.6
