In the name of God, Amen, on the 26th day of January in the year of the lord 1517, I, Thomas Maplesden of the parish
Will, page 2:
of Merden, Canterbury diocese, sound of mind and of sane memory, make my testament in this manner. First of all, I bequeath and commend my soul to omnipotent God, the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, and my body to be buried in the church of St Michael of Marden, for which burial I bequeath to the use of the same church 10s. Item, I bequeath to the high altar of the same church for my tithes and oblations and things retained 20d. Item, I bequeath to Thomas Rolff for the like 12d. Item, I bequeath to each light, being in the aforesaid church, 4d. Item, I bequeath to Thomas Wylmysherst in satisfaction of the money received by me for the cultivation of his land 12d. Item, I bequeath to Gervase Hendele, son of Thomas Hendell, my great ?vern. Item, I bequeath to the heirs of John Robard of Hawkeherst 6s 8d. Item, I bequeath to Elizabeth Maplesden, daughter of John Maplesden, 12d. The rest, indeed, of all my goods and chattels, not bequeathed above, my debts and bequests first of all having been thereupon paid, I give and bequeath to Joan my wife and George my son. Which same Joan and George I ordain, make and appoint as my executors of this my will, so that they ordain and dispose for the salvation of my souls, as will seem best and most useful to them to please God and to carry out for my soul. Item, I make and appoint John my son as my overseer of this my will, to which same John I bequeath for his labour around the premises 20s.

thapp[ur]ten[a]nces sett lyeng and being yn the p[ar]isshes of Marden
and Stapleherst equally betwene thaym fro[m] the day of my
deth unto the tyme my said son George com to the age of
xxviij yeres And then I will my said Feoffes or their Assign[es]
shall deliv[er] or do to be deliv[er]ed to my said son[n]e George a a suffi-
-cie[n]t and a laufull estate of all the said landes and teneme[n]tes
with thapp[ur]ten[a]nces To have and to hold to hym to his heires
and assignes yn fee symple Res[er]vyng Allwaye unto my
my saide wif suche dowry as was to her graunted at the
tyme of her mariage As by writyng therof made more
playnely it appereth Providy[n]g furthermore that if
my said son[n]e George do marye w[i]t[h]yn the saide age of xxviij
yeres Then I will my said feoffes their heyres or assign[es]
shall graunte out of my foresaid landes and tene[me]ntes a sufficie[n]t
dowry or a[n]nuyte to endowe yn his wif t[er]me of her liff

issue of his bodye lawfully begoten Then I will Petre

handes of Stephen Berworthe of Gowdeherst or to the
churche wardens of the same for the rep[ar]acion of a bell of
Gowdeherst v marke / And all the Residue of the money
comy[n]g of the sale of the saide ij peeces of land I will it shalbe
paid to Thomasyne my dought[er] It[e]m I will Thomasyne
my said daught[er] shalhave iiij peeces of land with thapp[ur]te-
-naunces lyeng yn Horsemonden wherof one of thaym ys
called the Mellmede And the other thre be called Mottys
To have and to hold to her and to her Assignes yn fee symple
if she do marrye or els I will that she shalhave the said
iiij peeces of land but only dury[n]g all her liff And the
Rev[er]sion of the said iiij peeces of Land I wull to Pet[er] Ma-
-plesden aforesaid yn fee symple And all the residue of
all my landes yn Gowdeherst and Horsemonden I will to
John my son And if my said son John do lett or int[er]rupte

lyeng yn Gowdeherst called Redynge co[n]teynyng by
