106Jesse seems have to remained in Hancock County for the rest of his life. The censuses show his family—and the number of slaves he owned—grow over the years.

As noted above, the 1850 census shows that 106Jesse lived in militia district 116 (map), Hancock County,1 which is consistent with the following newspaper announcement, published in August 1858.8


1858: 106Jesse is said to live in Hancock County, 12 miles from Milledgeville. This is consistent with his living in militia district 116. Full page.8

Hancock County tax digests show that 106Jesse was still alive in 186210 but insinuate that he was probably dead by 1863.11

Somewhat surprisingly, I have found only one brief estate record: an inventory and appraisement done on 23 January 1872.12
