BRANTLEY, Sr. Mount Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church, better known as “Gumlog,” located in Johnson County, two miles north of Kite off Highway 221, was constituted in July 1880 by Brother S.L. Fortner and wife, Brother E.S. Fortner and wife, Sallie. Elder B.G. Fortner, Elder Jordan Norris and Elder S. Meeks were the ministers who of- ficiated at the constitution of said church. Gumlog was built on land donated by Sheriff Lewis Davis. Sheriff Davis’ grandson, Lewis Davis, is presently serving as a member of the Board of Deacons of Gumlog. Elder Jordan Norris served as pastor of the church for around twenty-five years. In the beginning, services were held once a month on the second Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. In the late seventies the church voted to have worship services every Sunday of each month. During the past ninty-six years, Gumlog has been served by eleven pastors. They include: Elder John Steptoe, Elder Henry Stephens, Elder Tol Thomas, Elder C.E. Hunnicutt, Elder Gilbert Hudson, Elder Bennette Davis, Elder Blass Copeland, Elder Grady Brantley (served sixteen years as pastor and whose son, Midas, follows), elder Neal Wall, Elder Midas Brantley (son of H.G. and Linnie Lee Wheeler Brantley, served as pastor for eight years), and Elder Jack Holder. Elders Midas Brantley, Jack Holder, Wimp Rowland, and Felton Johnson are men who grew up in the church and were ordained to preach the Gospel. In 1959 we built a Sunday School building of which we are very pro- ud. In 1967 a deep well was dug and in 1968 rest rooms were built. In 1971 we had our church bricked and redone inside. In 1978 we had our church centrally heated and cooled and this year we are having our cemetery fenced and our picnic shelter remodeled. We have also had our parking area extended, a new brick sign erected and purchased ad- ditional land across from the present church. Clerks of Church have been: J.I. Wiggins, S.L. Fortner, J.B. Davis, C.T.J. Claxton, A.G. Wheeler, M.O. Davis, George W. Holder, Z.W. Claxton, Midas R. Brantley, C.L. Claxton, B.Y. Flanders, H.T. Meeks, H.G, Brantley, Sr., Buren Claxton, and Annette C. Ivey. One of the things that Gumlog has been known for over the years is its singing of the Gospel songs. Our members and visitors have made singing here seem different from anywhere else. Everyone seems to receive a spiritual uplift and blessing after singing at Gumlog.
