I: Stephen Durouzeaux was still alive on 9 October 1833 (1), and Serena was born on 3 July 1833 (2). On or before 14 March 1833 Stephen had petitioned for divorce due to Piety's "adulterous connections with divers men" (3), so Serena's biological father is questionable, but Serena did at least adopt Stephen's surname, as proven by her subsequent marriage record, which gives her name as "Deriso," a simplification of Derouzeaux (4). Serena's stepfather (and possible biological father?) James J. Black, who had married Piety in 1835 (5), was later noted as "insane" and lived in the home of Serena and her husband Calvin (6), who in 1863 was described as James' agent (7); his presence helps to affirm Serena's identity and strongly suggests that her mother was Piety.
